Bet types

Which horse racing bets can I place?

Listed from the simplest to the hardest to land. Most people start with win, place or each-way.

Win

Your horse has to finish first. Short-priced favourites lose more often than people expect, so don't treat a low price as a sure thing.

Place

Your horse has to finish in the paid places, usually the first two, three or four depending on the race. It pays less than a win bet and lands more often.

Each-way

Two equal bets in one: one on the win and one on the place. A ₹200 each-way bet costs ₹400 in total.

Forecast

Name the first and second in the right order. A reverse forecast covers both orders and costs two stakes.

Tricast

Name the first three in the exact order. It rarely comes off, which is why it pays so well when it does.

Ante-post

Bet days or weeks before the race, often at a bigger price. If your horse doesn't run, the bet usually loses.

Race card

How do I read a horse racing card?

Each runner on the card has its recent form figures, jockey, trainer, weight and draw. The form figures are the place to start. Read them left to right: the run on the far right is the most recent.

So a horse showing 3-21 finished third last season, then second, then won its latest race.

What does "the going" mean?

The going is the state of the ground on race day. It runs from firm, through good, to soft and heavy. Plenty of horses run well on one type of ground and poorly on another, so look at how each runner has done on similar going before you bet.

  1. Firm
  2. Good
  3. Soft
  4. Heavy

Fastest ground on the left, slowest on the right.

Each-way

How does an each-way bet pay out?

The win half pays at the full price if your horse wins. The place half pays at a fraction of the price, often a quarter or a fifth, if your horse finishes in the places. When the horse wins, both halves pay.

If the horse finishes outside the places, you lose both stakes.

Worked example

₹100 each-way at 9.00, one-fifth place terms

Total stake ₹200. Place price 2.60.

Finishes 2nd
Place half returns ₹260. The win half loses.
Wins
₹900 + ₹260 = ₹1,160 back.

Place price = 1 + (9.00 − 1) ÷ 5 = 2.60.

Ask support

What's the difference between a win bet and a place bet?

A win bet only pays if your horse finishes first. A place bet pays if it finishes anywhere in the paid places, so it wins more often but pays less.

How many places does an each-way bet pay?

It depends on how many runners there are and the type of race. Small fields might pay two places, and big handicaps can pay four or more. The place terms are shown on each market before you bet.

What happens if my horse is withdrawn?

If you bet on the day and the horse is withdrawn before the race, the bet is usually void and your stake comes back. Ante-post bets placed days or weeks earlier normally lose. Check the terms on the market or ask support if you're unsure.

Betting rules

What is a forecast bet?

A forecast means naming the horses that finish first and second, in the right order. A reverse forecast covers them in either order and costs two stakes.
